A reflector buys far more aperture for the same money and asks to be collimated; a refractor holds its alignment for years and gives up aperture to do it. The right answer depends on whether you will own a collimation tool.
Both designs are sold in the same price brackets, and the comparison is not really optical. It is about which compromise you would rather live with.
What the reflector buys you
A mirror needs one polished surface where a lens needs four, and it does not have to be transparent. The result is that a reflector delivers more aperture per unit of money than any other design, and aperture is the figure that decides what is visible at all.
The price of the mirror: collimation
Collimation. The two mirrors have to be aimed at each other, and a tube that has been carried will drift. The job takes a few minutes with the right tool and is impossible to judge without one, which is why an uncollimated reflector so often gets blamed for being a poor telescope.
What the refractor buys you
Permanence. A sealed tube holds its alignment, keeps dust off the optics, and shows a slightly higher-contrast image for a given aperture because nothing sits in the light path. It is the instrument most likely to still be working in a decade.
How to decide
Ask whether you will buy and use a collimation tool. If the honest answer is yes, the reflector is more telescope for the money by a wide margin. If it is no, buy the refractor and enjoy an instrument that will never ask anything of you.
The questions that keep arriving
Does a refractor really never need alignment?
Not never, but effectively so for most owners. The lens cell is fixed at the factory and a refractor that has not been dropped will hold its alignment through years of ordinary use. A reflector that has travelled in a car boot may want checking the same evening.
Is a reflector harder to look after?
It is more exposed. The tube is open at the front, so dust reaches the mirror, and the mirror is aluminium coated rather than glass all the way through. Neither is difficult; both are more than a sealed tube asks for.
