One tool, two focuser sizes

A 1.25 in body with a 2 in adapter in the box. Anyone who owns both a small refractor and a large Newtonian needs both fittings, and buying the adapter separately means buying one whose squareness is unknown.

The triplet

Three cemented elements to sharpen the projected beam. A tighter spot is easier to judge against a centre mark, and this is the only collimator on this shelf that says anything at all about its own optics.

Seven steps of brightness

Zero to seven. Bright for daylight, where the return spot has to compete with ambient light; dim for night, where a bright spot costs dark adaptation. The range is the useful specification here.

What the listing does not address

Whether the tool can be trued. Every laser collimator should be rotated in the focuser and checked, and one that cannot be corrected has to be returned rather than adjusted. Nothing here says which this is.

German, French, Italian and Spanish Amazon stores ran from 36 € to 40 € on the day of the survey.

British Amazon store lists it in local currency, which the euro range above sets aside.

American Amazon store gave no result whatever, so the buy button there opens a search rather than an empty page.
