Two numbers, and the maker names both

Two point six kilograms and a twenty-one millimetre bore. Those are the only two specifications a counterweight has, and plenty of listings on this shelf publish only the first.

The instruction worth following

Omegon says it directly: measure the diameter of your own counterweight shaft before ordering. That is the step that goes wrong, and it takes ten seconds with a ruler.

Steel

Denser than cast iron for the same mass, so the weight is physically smaller and sits closer to the shaft. On a short shaft that matters — a bulky weight can foul the tripod when the mount swings.

Where it belongs

On a mount whose balance has changed, which happens the moment a camera, a guide scope or a heavy eyepiece is added. A mount balanced with a bare tube and then loaded with two kilograms of accessories is not balanced.
